Each September, the Savannah River carries a field of triathletes downstream through the centre of Augusta. IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta returns on Sunday, 27 September 2026, and the question for every athlete and every supporter is the same: where to stay.
The race
IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta is one of the most established half-distance triathlons in the United States. The 1.2-mile swim runs down-current in the Savannah River, from the Sharon Jones Amphitheater in North Augusta to the 5th Street Marina in downtown Augusta, and it is famously quick. The 56-mile bike course leaves the city for rolling country roads. The 13.1-mile run crosses the 13th Street Bridge, follows the North Augusta Greeneway, and finishes at the Augusta Common in the heart of downtown. Since its inception in 2009, the race has drawn more than 1,600 volunteers each year and has generated over $76 million for the Augusta region.
Race week
Athlete check-in, briefings and the race expo take place downtown on the Friday and Saturday before the race. Race morning begins early; transition opens before dawn, and the first wave enters the water at 7:00 a.m. Athletes who arrive on Thursday or Friday, sleep well on Saturday, and remain through Monday finish the weekend in better order than those who do not.
Where to stay
The Pine Cone is a five-bedroom residence on 1.2 private acres in Evans, Georgia, fourteen miles from the finish line and well removed from the road closures downtown. It accommodates twelve guests in comfort, and fourteen with the queen air bed. For an athlete travelling with family, a training group sharing the expense, or a coach with a full roster, the arithmetic is favourable: five bedrooms, two and a half baths, and one address.
The particulars matter during race week. The chef’s kitchen, with its double oven and wine refrigerator, allows a household to prepare its own race-morning breakfast and recovery dinners. The dedicated office with a door that closes serves the athlete who must work on Friday. The hot tub and the screened porch attend to Sunday evening. The wrap-around drive offers several private parking spaces, so bicycles and support vehicles remain off the street. The neighbourhood is quiet, and on the night before a 7:00 a.m. swim, that is the amenity that counts.
