For one week each April, a quiet corner of Georgia becomes the center of the sporting world. The azaleas oblige. The patrons arrive. Every bed within thirty miles of Magnolia Lane is spoken for, most of them months in advance. The question is not whether to come. The question is where to sleep.
The house that makes the week
The Pine Cone is a five-bedroom residence on 1.2 landscaped acres in Evans, Georgia, eight miles from the gates of Augusta National. It accommodates twelve guests in comfort, and up to sixteen with two queen air mattresses with headboards, available upon request. A canopy of mature pines keeps the neighbors at a discreet distance. The wrap-around drive keeps the cars off the street. The chef’s kitchen, with its double oven and wine refrigerator, keeps the whole party fed without a restaurant reservation in sight.
Mornings, then, are unhurried. Coffee on the screened porch. A proper breakfast before the gates open. In the evening the deck lights come on, the hot tub steams beneath the pines, and the day’s leaderboard is argued over at the fire pit. The game room, with its arcade, foosball table and 65-inch television, settles any remaining disputes.
For the group that travels well
A foursome with spouses. A client party of ten. A family that has waited years for its tickets. The Pine Cone suits each of them, and it suits them together. A dedicated office with a door that closes serves the guest who must take a call between rounds. Fast internet serves everyone else.
The arithmetic
Masters Week hotel rates in Augusta are the stuff of legend. Five bedrooms under one roof, reserved directly and without a booking-platform fee, compare very favorably with four or five rooms in town. The residence is reserved by one party at a time, and the gates of Augusta National are eight miles away.
